A material story in layers
From the first primed core to the final coat, every Red Door piece passes through dozens of stages and weeks of natural drying. We coat, wet-sand and coat again — until the surface holds the depth and stillness of dark water.
Red Door crafts handmade lacquerware in the Ha Thai craft village near Hanoi: trays, boxes, coasters and decorative objects — coated in layers, wet-sanded and hand-polished, SGS-tested to European standards and exported to the USA and Europe.

Lacquer process
The lacquer process
A finished piece of lacquerware passes through dozens of stages: building the core, priming, coating, wet-sanding and polishing. None of them can be hurried.
- 0101
Building the core
A wooden or pressed-bamboo core is wrapped in cloth and sealed with raw lacquer mixed with alluvial soil, forming the stable base of every piece.
- 0202
Priming
Layer after layer of priming lacquer goes onto the core; each must dry naturally in a humid curing room for days before it is sanded flat.
- 0303
Coating and wet-sanding
Coloured lacquer is applied and then sanded by hand under water. This cycle of coating and sanding gives lacquerware its signature depth.
